An employee at the Georgia Archives has discovered Georgia’s official copy of the Declaration of Independence. While going through microfilm at the Archives the date “1777” date caught a researcher’s eye and he backed the images up to take a closer look. The researcher had found Georgia’s official copy of the Declaration that had been misfiled in a book of documents from 1789-1827.The image I’ve posted here is the Georgia copy of the Declaration. Though the document has now been placed in “Vault Two” of the Archives they have provided a link here where you can click through and see the entire image of the unique find. In the search box for "Ad Hoc documents" you will need to enter the word "declaration" to go to the correct page. Unlike the Dunlap broadside copies of the Declaration, the Archives discovery will be considered an “original” and is very rare indeed.
