New Georgia Blogs!

If you are a Georgia blogger and would like for me to link to you please drop me an email at gamind@mail.com .

Here are this week’s new additions and don’t forget to enjoy the latest Georgia Carnival here.

Moon Dreams & Day Beams – Christy Griner presents a lovely window to the whimsey old world of her favorite little fancies and obsessions. Her Banana Cream Desert predicts resounding yumminess.

First Baptist Church, Lithia Springs...A History – This blog is presented by the Historical Committee of the First Baptist Church, Lithia Springs. The project was implemented to share the rich history of the church with church members, the Lithia Springs community, and the world at large. Okay, I admit it….I’m a little prejudiced here because I’m on the committee, and I’m the blog’s webmaster. :)

GeorgiaDogs.com – This is the official athletic site of the Georgia Bulldogs. While it isn’t exactly a blog there is nothing like Bulldog news coming from the Bulldog’s mouth!

Southern Byways – written by Apryl Chapman Thomas, this blog covers the Interstates and backroads throughout Texas to D.C. Apryl has just announced new features for the site coming in August including “Doin the Town” and “Going Green in the South”. More new features can be found in Apryl’s post here. There are several articles regarding Georgia.

The Ubiquitous Librarian – Brian Mathews is the User Experience Librarian at Georgia Tech. Back in May, Brian reviewed a book by Emory professor, Mark Bauerlein, titled The Dumbest Generation. This comment of Brian’s really spoke to me about the business of libraries….” Personally, I don’t see the library as being in the information business. In fact, I don’t see us in the service business anymore either. We’re in the inspiration business, and everything that we do should drive their success.” Oh, I SO agree!

The last edition of the Georgia carnival can be found
here, and the carnival archives are found here.

Now… on to the highlights of Georgia blogging during the past two weeks.

Dawn, over at Belle of the Blog presents Hey Bulldog!. It’s a nice tribute to UGA VI and his Bulldog ancestors.

William Cotter, our wonderful Paw Paw Bill discusses the recent Miss Universe pageant with a very different take on the whole matter…..His post, Best Kept Secrets, is a great read.

Remember Billy Joel’s landmark album, “The Stranger”? I think I still have my copy around here somewhere….Can you believe it’s now 30 years old? Paul over at Cries Of The Heart helps us remember with his thoughts regarding The Stranger.

My good friend Donna always has the most interesting pictures at her blog, Sew Blessed. Her post Happy 4th and Happy 10th doesn’t disappoint. Look at the third picture down…..click on it for a close up view. Hmmmmmmmm……what is the eerie greenish lights behind the fireworks? Anyone got a clue? Are the spirits getting into the action?

Over at Considerettes Doug discusses Clinging to Guns and Religion….an Independence Day sort of post.

My son is in college…..I just want to know one thing----I’m paying $18,000 plus a year for this?

Yay!, John from Grasping For The Wind has received his first book review blurb. Check out his post My First Blurb!

Paw Paw Bill also shares with us With Soul So Dead……one interesting quote (there are many to choose from) from the article stands out, “Sometimes people confuse patriotism with political partisanship, militarism or jingoism. Not just my country right or wrong, but my country is never wrong, or I’m never wrong. However, patriotism comes in more than just one flavor, or even two.”

What do you call your minister? Did you know there is a valid argument for not using the title “Reverend”? Over at "Got Bible?" I share Reverend: False Elevation or Grammatical Error?

Calling All Georgia Bloggers……….

Chris over at Amateur Traveler podcast recently contacted me wanting to let all Georgia bloggers kow that he’s looking for guests to appear on his podcasts and talk about our wonderful state. Best Life Magazine named Amateur Traveler on of the best 10 podcasts on the Internet, and the Chicago Sun Times included the show on their list of 10 “Best travel sites”

He’s looking for Georgians who are knowledgeable about specific destinations and can tell a good yarn. The audience over at Amateur Traveler is 70% in the US and 30% international-----this means the destinations discussed need to have more than just a regional interest. Chris conducts his interviews by phone or Skype (you need a computer and a headset), and his interviews usually last about 30 minutes. You can contact Chris by using the information at this page.

Some of the questions Chris usually covers in an interview include: Why should someone visit Georgia? What were your trip highlights? What do the guidebooks/tourists miss? What should you eat? Where should you stay? What sidetrips would you recommend? and What was your biggest surprise?

Personal travel stories that lend color commentary and give a flavor of the place are always welcome.

Make sure you check Amateur Traveler out!

Mirth For Monday

I may be his momma, but I’m not eactly exaggerating when I say my son has a little talent. His talents include a fantastic singing voice, self-taught guitar skills, and an ability to immerse himself in various musical roles he undertook in high school.

It was no surprise when Dear Son called me over the weekend and directed me to the YouTube video I’m featuring below asking, “Hey Mama, ya wanna see me in a starring role?”

Well, of course I did, and I hurried right over to the link he provided. So, I present here my son in the starring role of Jeff Goes to College, a short promotional video for this year’s orientation at Truett McConnell College. Yes, that's the place....the place we pay thousands of dollars to each year. :)

Yep, that’s my boy……the one in the bear suit. When he’s not a YouTube star my son is busy pursuing a history degree….at least that’s his story for this week.

Enjoy your Monday!

New Additions to the Blogroll

The blogroll of Georgia bloggers here at Georgia on My Mind just keeps getting longer and longer….

If you are a Georgia blogger and would like for me to link to you please drop me an email at gamind@mail.com .

Here are this week’s new additions and don’t forget to enjoy the latest Georgia Carnival here:

Why Do You Ask? – Ric Murry is an educator making the move this summer from the media center back to a 7th grade social studies classroom. One of his latest postings involved a word cloud and a discussion regarding the proposed standards for Georgia Social Studies instruction.

ChrisMoncus.com - Chris is an aspiring photographer (need a wedding photographer?) who also serves as the Associate Tech Director at St. Simons Community Church. His professional site is being revamped, but I urge you to stop by and view his portfolio for some very creative and interesting wedding shots. His Flicker page is here.

Next Stop...Decatur – The tagline at this site states Decatur and I are old friends. I’ve been there many times and it’s always been good to me. A recent post included an announcement of the McDonough Street Mark on July 18th and 19th. This blog promotes the lovely city of Decatur so well that I just might make it my next place to go explorin’.

Blog d'Elisson – The tagline states another monumental exercise in self-aggrandizement and time-wasteage. What Ellison forgets to tell you is his site is just damn entertaining……Krispy Kreme Bacon Cheeseburgers was the topic of a post just a few days ago complete with a picture.

Mrs. Nespy's Frugal World – This blog was included in the last Georgia Carnival. Kaye’s post topics center on different ways to save money. Recently Kaye has been writing about teaching children about money. In her four part series Kaye discusses credit, giving, spending, and saving money.

Georgia Carnival: Edition 39

Welcome to the Georgia Blog Carnival!

The next carnival will be hosted here at
Georgia on My Mind on Friday, July 18th. Submissions will be due Thursday, July 17th.

If you maintain a Georgia blog and would like to host the carnival at your site e-mail me to set up a date. It’s a great way to put your own personal spin on the carnival.

The last edition of the Georgia carnival can be found
here, and the carnival archives are found here.

Now… on to the highlights of Georgia blogging during the past two weeks.

Happy Fourth! In Atlanta, the Fourth of July means The Peachtree Road Race….and this year The Peachtree and the Georgia Blog Carnival has something in common. No, I’m not running. I prefer to listen to the results and see the unveiling of the coveted t-shirt on television later in the day.

The Peachtree Road Race and the Georgia Blog Carnival are both on their 39th editions! What a coincidence. The AJC’s official page for The Peachtree can be seen here. Good luck to everyone involved…..

Kaye presents Savannah Family Fun – The Intro posted at Mrs Nespy's World. This is the first in a series of posts regarding things to do in Savannah. Spending a LOT of money, spending some money, and a completely frugal fun time in Savannah are all covered by the series.

A couple of young men I know are doing something rather amazing. They have dropped their normal summer plans of chillin’ with their friends to head to Peru to share the word of God. Over at Got Bible I ask, “Would you....could you do this?

Last time Ethan over at Never Clever Whatsoever gave us his thoughts on the Georgia’s CRCT debacle. For this edition he shares some Extra Thoughts of the CRCT.

Another hot-button issue is the state of Georgia’s Mental Health Services. Read William Cotter’s informational post Georgia Officials in State of Denial published at Paw Paw Bill.

Imagine my surprise when a local candidate for office began to promote a detail about Douglas County history which instantly confused folks. After a trip to the county library I posted The Skinny on How Skint Chestnut Became Douglasville, or How Douglas County Lost Its "S". Unfortunately, the candidate didn’t like the whole story and resorted to attacking my teaching methods even though he’s never been in my classroom. Imagine that!

Ken Clark, CFP presents Georgia Tax Deduction for Section 529 Contributions posted at Saving for College - About.com, saying, "Georgia residents can save significant money on their state income tax return by contributing to a Section 529 college account for their children or grandchildren."

Amy presents The Outrigger Island posted at The Q Family Adventure, saying, "They had a fun week in VBS aloha style."

Well, it wouldn’t be the Fourth without some political commentary, would it? William Cotter shares Hatchet In A Haystack and Obama On Fathers posted at Paw Paw Bill.

I became a little interested in Carnegie libraries during a recent trip to Atlanta’s Little Five Points. What’s a Carnegie library? I’m glad you asked. Here are 13 Things about them posted over at History Is Elementary

…and last but not least the latest edition of Landlord Profits can be seen here.
